For local baker, Josie Chung, these moments should taste as good as they look. Josie believes that there is no single thing more disappointing than cutting into an intricately decorated cake, and having it taste just "okay". As the owner of Sugar-Coated, her cake creations can't help but bring spontaneous jubilee. Rich, classic and creative flavors wait under the surface of creamy frosting refuse to earn anything less than a stellar reputation.
For over 10 years now, Josie's apron has been coated in confection, and her customers keep coming back for more.

Josie's love of food shaped by her Chamorro, Jamaican and Chinese heritage. Her childhood was filled with celebrations, with food at the very center. The creator behind this culinary celebration? Josie's grandmother, "Ipa". Ipa was graceful in the kitchen. Her skills were unmatched among the family, earning praise of the hard-to-please aunties. From simple Sunday dinners, to perfect pastries, Ipa is the highest standard of culinary excellence one could achieve.
Since Ipa's passing, Josie seeks to honor Ipa in every birthday cake, pie, cupcake, and cookie she professionally decorates by hand.
Bringing People Together with Custom Birthday & Wedding Cakes
Josie started Sugar Coated in 2014 as a hobby baker. She was a middle-schooler who took her passion for decorating straight into the kitchen. What started with a contribution to family dinners became a devotion to desserts. At the time, Josie had her mind set on working in interior design. As she began to sell confections to family, neighbors, and friends she heard this same question arise again and again.

As Josie practiced making cakes, and her artistry began to advance. Her love of decorating was no longer reserved for rooms. When her desire to design was fulfilled in baking, she began to run after owning her own bakery.
She began as a baker at Kettel House in Marion, and then Kathy's pies. Josie was a beadmaker at Rustic Hearth. At every job, every management role, and early morning in the bakery, she has been quietly preparing to open her own establishment: Sugar Coated-- named after the "baker's glitter" that litters her aprons and countertops.
